The electric mountain bike is like no other method of transport. It gets you off the bike path and into some unique scenery and history. I'm a big guy (6'3" and 200lbs) and the bike was perfect. After a long tour which could have continued, there was no fatigue or soreness that you would get on a normal bike. Since you're able to keep up the speed, you cover a lot of territory that you wouldn't normally be able to. The Dutch fietspad network is a wonderful thing but the ability to get off-piste is truly exhilarating especially this area of Europe where the topography is so interesting. Having the local knowledge and capable guide makes all the difference.
Andrea and Rob really know the territory and can lead the way to incredible vistas and tastes. At no time did it feel unsafe. The best part for me was the fact that there were no other people around for the majority of the trip. There was mile after mile of beauty and silence. The pathways we took seem to be traveled by nobody but deer and the occasional farmer. Straight along a narrow ridge between potato and beet fields and into a forest path on a bright sunny day one truly feels communion with nature.
Turning off the forest path and into a field and suddenly finding oneself surrounded by the forts of the Liège fortress ring dating to WW2, almost untouched with not a single person around, was truly one of the highlights. Just finding the place is a feat unto itself! Next, back into the forest and a big climb to a high point overlooking the Albert canal and the surrounding Dutch, Belgian and German countryside was breathtaking.
Thirsty? You're never far away from a patio serving a delicious local cold beer. Hungry? We'll just duck into a three-hundred year old trout farm and have a plate of smoked trout and vegetables and watch the swans and ducks enjoying the day before getting back on the bike.
If you like to be away from the crowds and off the beaten track while getting a bit of a workout - but not too much - this is the tour for you. After a couple of days I felt like we had just scratched the surface of this wonderful play land of touring and tasting. I will be back!
